Objectives
To document the prevalence and the socio-spatial variations of obesity and to identify individual and household characteristics, lifestyles and dietary practices contributing to obesity and its socio-spatial distribution.
DesignPopulation-based cross-sectional survey. We selected 1570 households from four strata characterised as unstructured and low building-density (ULBD), unstructured and high building-density (UHBD), structured and low building-density (SLBD) and structured and high building-density (SHBD) areas. Structured areas are those that were allotted by the township authority (cadastral services), with public services; unstructured areas refer to those developed with no cadastral organisation.
SettingOuagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso.
SubjectsBMI was calculated in 2022 adults aged 35 years and above who were classified as obese when their BMI was ≥30 kg/m2. Obesity was investigated in relation to household and individual characteristics, lifestyles and dietary practices; adjusted odds ratios with 95 % confidence intervals were derived from a logistic regression model.
ResultsThe overall prevalence of obesity was 14·7 % (males 5·5 % and females 21·9 %). Age, gender, household equipment index, usual transport with motor vehicles and micronutrient-rich food consumption were associated with obesity. After adjustment for these factors, obesity remained associated with the area of residence: residents from SHBD areas were more likely to be obese than those from ULBD areas (OR = 1·41; 95 % CI 2·59,4·76).
ConclusionsObesity in Ouagadougou is a preoccupant problem that calls for more consideration. Thorough investigation is needed to assess the environmental factors that contribute to the socio-spatial disparity of obesity.

Population subdivision among mouflon sheep Ovis gmelini ewes and ranging behaviour of rams were investigated in the Caroux-Espinouse massif (southern France). Radio-tracking data from 32 ewes and 41 rams monitored in the course of a 10-year study were used to identify female units and to document the movement patterns of males during the rutting period. Cluster analyses, based on the distance between arithmetic centres and on the degree of overlap of locations, were computed. Ewes were found to be partitioned in three or four main units to which they were faithful. Movement patterns of rams were much more variable: half were faithful to a rutting range, overlapping one or more unit(s), and the others were not. We suggest that a combination of social and spatial attachment could explain this ranging behaviour. Females build up their spatial habits following their mothers and, when adults, they occupy the area where they have been reared. Their spatial attachment is consistent with their social preferences for other females. Males balance between antagonistic spatial attachment and social preferences for other males, and differ in terms of spatial behaviour. The genetic implications are discussed.

Branched-chain amino acids (AA) are mostly metabolized in the splanchnic area, but some are metabolized within the mammary gland and thus could contribute to the synthesis of non-essential AA (Wohlt et al. 1977). The extraction rate of leucine from plasma by the mammary gland is particularly high (64% in the goat; Roets et al. 1983), in excess of that used for the synthesis of milk proteins (Davis & Mepham, 1976; Wohlt et al. 1977; Roets et al. 1983). Thus, although mammary leucine is mainly used for milk protein, it also provides amino nitrogen and carbon sources for the synthesis of non-essential AA.
To our knowledge, no information is available on the transfer and distribution of plasma leucine amino nitrogen to milk protein AA. Using the technique for chromatographic fractionation of AA recently developed by Casseron et al. (1997), we studied the specific 15N enrichment of casein (CN) AA in the goat given a single intravenous injection of [15N]leucine.

The aim of this work was to determine by ion-exchange liquid chromatography and isotope ratio mass spectrometry the specific 15N enrichment of amino acids in casein and plasma proteins in cows receiving three successive daily oral doses (300, 150 and 150 g) of (15NH4)2SO4 (10 atom per cent isotopic enrichment) and to examine the 15N enrichments obtained with regard to nitrogen transport and metabolism in the lactating cow. To investigate the 15N distribution in amino acids in casein and in plasma proteins, samples of 15N-labelled casein and plasma proteins were extracted either from a pool of several milkings (36–96 h after starting to administer the tracer) or from pooled venous blood (removed on the fourth day after the start of administration) from the four lactating cows. 15N enrichments of the proteins studied, expressed as atoms percent excess, were 0·2509 for casein and 0·0577 for plasma protein. Chromatographic fractionation of the amino acid mixture (protein hydrolysates) resulted in nine groups containing between one and four amino acids: Asp, Ser and Thr; Glu; Pro; Gly, Ala, Val and Met; Ileu and Leu; Tyr; Phe; His and Lys; and Arg. High 15N incorporation was demonstrated in all individual or groups of amino acids studied. In both proteins, Glu appeared to be the most enriched amino acid, Phe and Arg the least enriched. Most aliphatic molecules with a single amino group were highly enriched. The much lower (3·5–7·7-fold) enrichments in plasma protein compared with casein suggest considerable intracellular dilution at the site of liver protein synthesis. Finally, the amino acid separation methods are discussed and suggestions for improving them considered.

More than 1000 authentic samples of ethanols were extracted by quantitative distillation from vintage wines and brandies prepared from grapes harvested in well-defined regions and years. The 13C contents of these ethanols were determined by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and the 14C activity of most of these samples was determined by liquid scintillation counting (LSC). We show that the 13C content of a C3 plant such as grape vine, which strongly depends on water availability, spans nearly a 10% range worldwide. The efficiency of the 14C content of grape ethanols as a tracer of the CO2 turnover after the peak of the nuclear test in the 1960s is also discussed in terms of geographical effects. Finally, the necessity of a multi-isotopic approach, including 13C and 14C isotopes, for detecting sophisticated adulterations is illustrated in the case of wines and brandies.
